The Four Temperament Types & How They Relate To Your Bodily Fluids 

 

When you hear the words “bodily fluids,” what comes to mind? Something gross, perhaps? How would you feel if someone told you that your personality might be defined by those fluids?

It’s actually one of the oldest theories in Western psychology, and part of the proto-medical concept known as humourism (and before you ask, no, it has nothing to do with comedy).

The word humor derives from the Latin term for “liquid” or “fluid”. Back in ancient Greece, Hippocrates, the father of medicine, proposed that the human body is governed by four key humors: blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. 

 

According to Hippocrates’ theory, the balance of these fluids can not only affect our physical health, but also our emotions and behavior. And it set the framework for the classic four temperament types in psychology:

• Sanguine (Blood-dominant): Outgoing and lively
• Choleric (Yellow bile-dominant): Ambitious and driven
• Melancholic (Black bile-dominant): Thoughtful and introspective
• Phlegmatic (Phlegm-dominant): Calm and easygoing

Of course, the idea of “humors” dictating our personalities was eventually dismissed (as a “joke,” you might say) by modern science, but the concept of the four temperaments was preserved.

Centuries later, Hans Eysenck, the British psychologist, was intrigued by this ancient concept and decided to give it a scientific upgrade. Through extensive statistical analysis, Eysenck discovered that human personality could be essentially defined by two main dimensions:

• Extraversion: Do you thrive on social interaction and external stimulation, or do you recharge best in the quiet of solitude?
• Neuroticism: Are you generally steady under pressure, or do you have a sensitive nervous system that leans toward anxiety and mood fluctuations?

Using these two dimensions as axes, you get four quadrants that align perfectly with the ancient four temperament model.
